How to play the MP beta
If you're on Xbox, PlayStation, or PC, you just need to find the beta in your platform's store and download it. The beta will be completely free. Notably, Call of Duty PC players will still be able to play on the usual Battle.net launcher, but Modern Warfare 2 will now give the option to also play on Steam.
The first pre-loading opportunity was on September 14 for PlayStation preorder players. It is now also available for both Xbox and PC.
What's included in the MP beta
Activision is slowly revealing the selection of multiplayer maps that will be available for the beta. So far, Farm 18, Valderas Museum, Mercado Las Almas, and Marina Bay Grand Prix have been announced. You can see a first look at the Marina Bay Grand Prix map here, and Infinity Ward provided a video of a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Farm 18. As previously announced by Infinity Ward, all of Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer maps were designed for traditional 6v6 matches.
However, there will also be a Ground War map included in the beta. Called Sarrif Bay, it features a mix of combat across the ground, air, and water, and pits 32 players on each team against each other.
New modes featured in the beta include the tactical Knockout, the Siege-like Prisoner Rescue, and the enormous Ground War mode Invasion. For the Friday playlist update on September 23, the following playlists are playable:
- Team Deathmatch
- Prisoner Rescue
- Knock Out
- Search & Destroy
- Third-Person POV
The following maps are playable:
- Farm 18
- Mercado Las Almas
- Breenbergh Hotel
- Valderas Museum
- Sariff Bay and Sa'id (Ground War and Invasion only)
Players who participate in Week 1 of the beta will get several rewards, including an emblem, sticker, weapon blueprint, and animated player card. In week 2, those rewards will be back alongside an operator skin, vinyl, another sticker, a vehicle skin, and another weapon blueprint. The beta will include Gunsmith 2.0, as well, so players can see just how much more customization they have over their weapons.
Campaign early access for preorders
Additionally, players can also get early access to Modern Warfare 2's campaign as a preorder bonus. Activision announced that everyone who digitally preorders Modern Warfare 2 will get first access to the game's campaign "up to" a week early, starting on October 20.
